NEW DELHI, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Conrad Sangma was sworn-in on Tuesday as the Chief Minister of India's northeastern state of Meghalaya, officials said.

The chief of regional National People's Party (NPP) was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad.

"Today during a function held here Conrad Sangma was sworn in as the 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya," a government official posted in Shillong city said.

Sangma claims to have the support of 34 lawmakers in 60-member lawmaking body of the state.

"My focus will be to provide good governance to the people of the state and to implement various government schemes which will bring development in the region," the 40-year-old Sangma told reporters.

Sangma is currently lawmaker in the lower House of the Indian parliament and as per law he has to get elected within six months from any local constituency of Meghalaya.
