Review: Manchester United rides its luck against Chelsea

LONDON, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United boosted its grip on third place in the Premier League with a 1-0 win away to Chelsea on Saturday, denting the London side's European ambitions.

Bruno Fernandes recorded his 18th assist of the season two minutes before halftime, allowing Matheus Cunha to put Manchester United ahead slightly against the run of play.

Chelsea improved in the second half and was unlucky not to take a point after Liam Delap hit a header against the crossbar and Wesley Fofana also strike the woodwork from close range as his side slipped to a fourth consecutive league defeat.

Tottenham's survival hopes suffered a cruel late blow when Georginio Rutter scored in stoppage time to earn Brighton a 2-2 draw, keeping Spurs in the relegation zone when they were moments from escaping the bottom three.

Pedro Porro's header in the 39th minute put Tottenham ahead, but Kaoru Mitoma leveled for Brighton on the stroke of halftime to increase the nerves among the home fans.

Xavi Simons then scored an excellent strike to put Tottenham back ahead with 13 minutes to play, but with the three points within touching distance Rutter popped up to finish a flowing Brighton attack.

Leeds United closed in on assuring its Premier League survival with a 3-0 win at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers that takes it to 39 points with five games to play.

James Justin opened the scoring in the 18th minute with an overhead kick and Noah Okafor doubled the lead just 90 seconds later, leaving Wolverhampton reeling. Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed the win with a 95th minute penalty, meaning Leeds have taken six points from their last two games.

Bournemouth showed no ill effects from coach Andoni Iraola's announcement that he will leave at the end of the season, claiming a 2-1 win away to Newcastle United.

Marcus Tavernier bundled home Bournemouth's opening goal in the 32nd minute, and although William Osula equalized in the 68th minute, Adrien Truffert struck in the 85th after an Evanilson assist to win it for the visitors.

The result increases the pressure on Newcastle coach Eddie Howe and if Iraola is a candidate to replace him at St James' Park, it was a strong audition for the Spaniard.

The day's early kicks off in the south-west London derby between Brentford and Fulham ended 0-0. Brentford sits level on 48 points with Chelsea and Bournemouth.
