RAMALLAH, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah on Thursday called on the European Union to build the Middle East peace on a recent initiative presented by President Mahmoud Abbas.
Hamdallah made the call during his meeting with ambassadors and representatives of the EU in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
"President Abbas' speech at the United Nations Security Council is an invitation to the world to contribute to peace and the two-state solution on the 1967 borders," Hamdallah said in a press statement.
Abbas "has put the international community before a historical opportunity to reach a fair and balanced political solution that ends the occupation and protect our legitimate national rights," he said.
The prime minister also stressed the role of the EU in establishing a just peace with international legitimacy in a way that guarantees the legal Palestinian rights.
At a special session of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Abbas presented a Palestinian peace initiative which addresses the fundamental problems that have led to the failure of the peace efforts for decades.
The Palestinian leader proposed holding an international peace conference based on UN resolutions in mid-2018, which should be attended by both Palestinian and Israeli sides.
Abbas' offer came amid the rising tension between Palestine and the United States since U.S. President Donald Trump recognized the disputed holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Dec. 6.
