GAZA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Islamic Hamas movement called on Monday for an international intervention to thwart a U.S. draft resolution condemning Hamas in the United Nations General Assembly.
Sami Abu Zuhri, a Gaza Hamas leader, said in a statement that "the international community is standing in front of a real test to prevent the U.S. administration from violating the international laws."
He said that the U.S. draft resolution "turns facts and overcomes the real problem," and "all international laws are calling for ending it."
Meanwhile, Hamas announced on Sunday night that its politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh made phone calls with Arab and foreign leaders to thwart the U.S. decision.
"Haniyeh sent letters to the UN Secretary General and urged them to seriously act in order to thwart the draft resolution that the U.S. intends to present before the UN General Assembly soon," said a statement issued by Haniyeh's office in Gaza.
The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on Thursday to a U.S. draft resolution that condemns Hamas movement for firing rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel.
The resolution would call on Hamas and Islamic Jihad to stop firing rockets from the coastal enclave that is under a tight Israeli blockade and stop releasing arson kites and balloons as part of a popular protest called the "Great March of Return."
