SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed on Tuesday in a fierce gunfight with troops in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight erupted on Monday night at Mir Mohalla-Tral of Pulwama district, about 39 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two militants were killed today in a gunfight with troops in Tral," a senior Indian army official said. "The gunfight started last night and continued until this morning," the official added.

The identity of slain militants was being ascertained, police said.

Reports said a civilian was also wounded in the crossfire between militants and government forces. According to locals, he has been removed to hospital.

Police officials said the village was cordoned off Monday night following specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

"No sooner the joint contingents of police and army reached the spot, they came under heavy fire, which triggered gunfight," a police official said.

Locals said a house was completely damaged in the exchange of fire between the holed up militants and troops.

Authorities have suspended mobile Internet service in the district and closed all the roads leading to the gunfight site.

Three paramilitary troopers, two policemen and two militants were killed in a three-day-long gunfight in Sopore on Sunday. A civilian was also wounded during clashes with government forces near the gunfight site.
