TOKYO, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Men's and women's world no. 1 Kento Momota of Japan and Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei made it into the badminton singles quarterfinals at the Japan Open by fending off their respective opponents here on Thursday.

Cheered by home crowd, Momota needed only 47 minutes to snatch a 21-12, 21-13 victory over Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand.

The home favorite will face off against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia, who shocked him in the round of 16 at the 2018 Asian Games.

Fourth-seeded Chou Tien-Chen of Chinese Taipei was stunned 21-19, 11-21, 21-19 by Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, who booked a quarterfinal clash with compatriot Rasmus Gemke.

The other two quarters will see Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia playing against Sai Praneeth B. of India and no.6 seed Jonatan Christie against another Dane Anders Antonsen.

In the women's singles, top seed Tai continued her road to title defense as the 25-year-old eased past Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia 21-18, 21-15 in 29 minutes. She will fight with Canadian Michelle Li for a semifinal ticket.

The remaining four of the top five seeds Chen Yufei of China, Nozomi Okuhara and Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, as well as Pusarla V. Sindhu also made the last eight while no. 6 seed He Bingjiao of China was upset by Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand 21-11, 21-17.

The quarterfinals will be played on Friday at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, which will host badminton and fencing events during Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
